I have read the reports about an engine fire aboard Carnival Triumph with great interest. I am so very sorry for all those affected, but am happy to hear that no one has been seriously injured by the mishap. But let’s face it, if you are one of the unfortunate cruisers and crewmembers caught in the middle of this mess, it sucks. Of course, the news media will hype things up, because, what’s not to love about a floating city of 4,000 floating at sea without working toilets.

I am neither a licensed mariner, naval engineer, or cruise line CEO. I don’t know why things like this happen, nor would it matter if I did. While one would, of course, wish that nothing like this ever happen, ships (like airplanes) are complicated machines that sometimes break. I’ve been fortunate to have only experienced minor mechanical issues in my various cruises. I’m sorry Carnival Triumph’s passengers have to endure this, but I am sure Carnival will do its best to get them to shore, and then home safely. Then, I hope they figure out what went wrong and take the steps necessary to prevent a recurrence. That’s about all I can say about it, except that if I had a little spare time off, I’d book a cruise tonight.

  1. Right there with you! At least it happened on the last day of their cruise so that they got to enjoy most of their vacation. This will not stop me from continuing to cruise (2-3 a year).

  2. You may go, but I won’t. Having NOTHING to do with this most recent event (lot of them, me thinks), I enjoy the destination and the quick trip there. Noodling around in seawater does not move me, any more than does several days of no flushing/showering or eating hot food. That Spam Salad Samich does not make it on any conveyance. On an airplane at ;east their are two easily outcomes: The second is a shower and a ride home. Don’t ask about the first. -C.

  3. Great post. It is how the line treats the customers after that matters. NCL, lied and ran on only one engine on my last 5 day, and just gave us some onboard credit! What a joke. As long as these folks get 100% refund or 100% credit for another cruise, I would be fine!
